A cane believed to belong to the man whose body was found in the Rock River has been found during a continuing investigation.
Police Detective Chris Buescher said Thursday that Daniel L. Eccles, 68, had a heart condition, which could have contributed to his death.
“At this point, it certainly looks accidental,†Buescher said, adding that some questions about the death might remain unanswered forever.
Eccles was a former roofer and U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam era, according to an obituary published in ThursdayÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Gazette.
The cane was found near the old brewery ruins, which is upstream from the Centerway Dam, where the body was found Monday. Papers that belonged to Eccles also were found, and they were still drying out Thursday, Buescher said.
The river bank is steep near where the cane was found, so itÃÛèÖÊÓƵ possible Eccles fell down the slope and into the water, and his mobility problems and heart condition could have contributed to what happened next, Buescher said.
ThatÃÛèÖÊÓƵ speculation, at least until lab tests are done, Buescher said.
Barry Irmen of the medical examinerÃÛèÖÊÓƵ department said the autopsy likely would not be finalized for “a few months.â€
Preliminary autopsy results showed no signs of injury that would have caused Eccles’ death nor any hint of foul play, Buescher said.
An autopsy found water in Eccles’ lungs, but thatÃÛèÖÊÓƵ not a sure sign of drowning because water can get into lungs if a body is in the water long enough, Buescher said.
There has been no evidence of suicide, either.
Police still were reviewing video from cameras that could help them establish when Eccles was last seen and whether he had his cane with him, Buescher said.
