The psychological toll of recovering the bodies of flood victims in Texas is drawing increased attention as the death toll grows. Flash floods deluged homes, campgrounds and an all-girls summer camp over the Fourth of July weekend. More than 100 people have been killed, with the bodies of 30 children having been recovered among them. Officials say 161 people are still known to be missing. Experts say the discussion about first responders’ mental health likely wouldn’t have occurred a generation ago. And while first responders have higher rates of psychological health conditions, most are resilient and able to process the challenges of their job.
