JANESVILLE — The Wisconsin Cheese Kings grabbed an early lead Monday afternoon at their home field at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex against the Lakeside Beach Bums in Dairyland Collegiate League baseball, but that lead soon disappeared.
In the first inning, Cheese King Drew Snipes scored on a wild pitch and Jake Ulbert scored Konner Giddley on an RBI ground out. But the Beach Bums would soon spoil the Cheese Kings’ 2-0 lead and win 12-3, using several multi-run innings to do so.
Lakeside (9-12) scored a run in the second and two in the third to tie the game at three. Later in the fifth inning, Sam Schneider doubled to drive in two.
The seventh inning saw JT Kelenic do the same, providing another RBI double with a ball hit deep into left field. After scoring a trio of runs in the seventh, Lakescored did the same in the ninth inning.
Leading the way for the Beach Bums’ offense was Jayden Jaramillo, who drove in four runs and went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Meanwhile, while WisconsinÃÛèÖÊÓƵ offense looked good early, it would fizzle out late. The Cheese Kings had runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth inning but were unable to capilize. In the ninth inning, they had two flyouts and a strikeout to end the inning and the game.
“We had really good at bats early,†Wisconsin coach Luke Schultz said. ‘You know, we scored those three in the first three innings and we’re right there in the driverÃÛèÖÊÓƵ seat, again, and we’re doing exactly what we should. And you know, we pressed there at the end.â€
The Beach Bums narrowly outhit the Cheese Kings 8-7.
“We’re hitting the ball hard,†Schultz said. “Tonight was just one of those nights where the ball just didn’t fall for us.â€
In the pitching department, five different Cheese Kings saw action. UW-La Crosse pitcher Braden Selsor got the start, going three innings and allowing three hits and just one earned run.
Two pitchers stood out to Schultz: Caleb Wilson and Bryce Ewing.
“Caleb Wilson, I want to make sure I’m giving him his flowers. HeÃÛèÖÊÓƵ been on short rest this year, struggling this year, and he came in and threw really well.â€
In one inning, Wilson allowed no hits and struck out one. Ewing pitched the two innings prior, and started the game on Saturday that eventually got rained out and didn’t count.
“Those two… both went out there and threw very well. We’re going to need them to continue to do that going forward, especially with the playoffs coming up pretty quick,†Schultz said.
Eight games remain until the playoffs, and Wisconsin holds a 7-13 record. The Cheese Kings host Johnson Creek Tuesday at 4 p.m.
