Lake Mills — EdgertonÃÛèÖÊÓƵ boys basketball team erased a 12-point second-half deficit en route to a narrow 50-49 triumph over Lakeside Lutheran in nonconference boys basketball on Saturday.
With 1-minute remaining, the contest was knotted up at 49. Edgerton guard Olin Zellmer shot a left-wing 3-pointer that was off the mark. Teammate Bryce Appel corralled the rebound and immediately attempted to convert the putback opportunity. Appel was fouled during the shot-attempt, resulting in a trip to the free-throw line where he went 1-for-2 to give the Crimson Tide (11-3 overall, 5-0 Rock Valley Conference) a 50-49 lead.
“There was a lot of chess play going on,†Edgerton coach Daryl Fox said about the final seconds of the game. “I think three timeouts got used in the last 2.3 seconds.â€
Before that free throw, Appel blocked a Lakeside Lutheran playerÃÛèÖÊÓƵ shot in the previous possession.
“He actually blocked the shot off the kidÃÛèÖÊÓƵ head, so it went out of bounds for our ball,†Fox said.
Two Warriors in particular gave the Crimson Tide trouble, each standing at 6-foot-8. Thomas Dwyer scored 15 points and Wes Rahn scored 11 against Edgerton.
“They caused us a lot of trouble in the first half, scoring close to the basket and rebounding their misses. They’re just so much bigger than us,†said Fox.
The Warriors led 32-24 at half.
“We kind of hung around in the first half...In the second half, we ended up getting down by 12, so then we extended our pressure on defense,†said coach Fox.
That defensive effort led to turnovers for the Crimson Tide.
“We made just enough plays. I mean every possession was hard for both teams. I mean the defense was really sound. 50-49 is pretty low scoring in todayÃÛèÖÊÓƵ world.â€
EdgertonÃÛèÖÊÓƵ next contest is Tuesday, when the Oregon Panthers travel to Edgerton for another nonconference game. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
