VERONA — MiltonÃÛèÖÊÓÆµ Kade Wieland came into Day 2 of the 99th WIAA Division 1 boys golf championship with the mindset to be “more aggressive†Tuesday at University Ridge.
The sophomore did just that, jumping up nine spots to claim third place after shooting a medal-winning score of 69, three strokes better than his performance Monday.
“I’m happy with it now because I had a better second day,†Kade said of his overall finish. “I mean, I wanted to win, but it didn’t happen for me.â€
“He played so well,†said Milton coach Kirk Wieland. “Just legitimately couldn’t really get anything to drop. He didn’t really miss many. He didn’t miss any three or four footers. He had countless eight to 10 footers that were burning the edges.â€
Kade ended his day with three consecutive pars. On hole 10, his final of the day, he caught in a sand trap and had to work his way out of it.

“You can’t putt bad and shoot 69. He just didn’t get the putts to drop that he needed. But overall, he played really, really well today,†Coach Wieland said.
Kade bogeyed just three holes—hole 1, 11 and 17. He also had four birdies and one eagle, which came on 16.
“ThereÃÛèÖÊÓÆµ definitely a lot of holes and shots that I wish I could have done better… there was just a couple of unfortunate breaks I had both days,†Kade said.
The individual champion is WaunakeeÃÛèÖÊÓÆµ Peyton Albers, who shot a 71 for his first round and 69 for his second. He beat HudsonÃÛèÖÊÓÆµ Drake Card k in a 3-hole playoff to take the title.
Marquette took the team title, shooting a 284 on Day 1 and 300 on Day 2. As a team, the Red Hawks 14th. After shooting a 334 on Monday, they shot a 319 on Tuesday.
“Amazing turnaround,†coach Wieland said.
Sophomore Tyler Birkhimer shot a 77 and finished tied for 37th. Senior Miles John shot an 87 and will finish 96th. Senior Liam Taylor shot a 92 and will finish 102 and freshman Chris Tilton shot an 86 and will finish 101.
“Every kid was better… we’re very happy,†Coach Wieland said.
