MILTON — In 2010, former Milton girls’ basketball team captain Katie Moreno had a desire to play basketball again. She saw the Milton boys basketball alumni tournament and it sparked an idea.
“I was just kind of like, ‘hey, where is the womenÃÛèÖÊÓƵ tournament?’, “ Moreno said.
It was a fair question because at the time there wasn’t one.
“ThatÃÛèÖÊÓƵ got to change,†Moreno said. “So, I decided we’re not just going to do a tournament, we’re going to find out a way to build community and give back to our town.â€
The first womenÃÛèÖÊÓƵ tournament was held in 2010. In addition, money is raised for a scholarship that is awarded to a college-bound, graduating senior who displays exemplary sportsmanship, not only on, but off the court.
This yearÃÛèÖÊÓƵ scholarship was awarded to Camryn Czerwinski, who received a $1,000 scholarship at the teamÃÛèÖÊÓƵ end of season banquet on March 17.
Czerwinski will be attending the UW-La Crosse where she will be studying criminal justice.
Multiple different local businesses contributed to the scholarship: First Community Bank, Milton Family Restaurant, Brian & Carol Watson, LucyÃÛèÖÊÓƵ Hideaway, friends of the Bob & Bob Golf Outing.
Moreno also said several other individual contributors among the Milton basketball community donated as well.
Friends of the Bob & Bob Golf Outing donated $500 dollars last year, the largest donation to date.
“It was really awesome because it felt like a full-circle moment of true reinvestment in our community,†Moreno said.
The game itself will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Milton High School Fieldhouse.
Moreno encourages any former player to play.
“ItÃÛèÖÊÓƵ more about getting together versus the actual game,†she said.
Moreno also said sheÃÛèÖÊÓƵ excited about this year because she expects more spectators.
Moreno said, “If members of the community are interested in making a donation, they can mail a check to First Community Bank in Milton made out to MHS Girls Alumni Basketball Scholarship.â€
She also said they can donate an item or gift card to be included in the gift basket that tournament spectators can buy a raffle ticket to enter to win.
