FORT ATKINSON — Nasco Education LLC has notified its employees and the city of Fort Atkinson of its plans to lay off at least 30 people at its Fort Atkinson facility.
The layoffs would happen “on or around†Aug. 22, according to a notice posted on the Wisconsin Department of Workforce DevelopmentÃÛèÖÊÓƵ website.
There are currently 136 employees at the site, according to the notice.
This could be followed by more layoffs, up to 60 through the end of the 2025 calendar year, said the notice that was sent to Fort Atkinson City Manager Rebecca Houseman.
“Our thoughts are with the 30 or so people who have received layoff notices. We appreciate their contributions to our community and hope that they can find employment opportunities elsewhere in Fort Atkinson,†Houseman said.
The notice would ordinarily not be required, according to the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act and the Wisconsin Business Closing and Mass Layoff Law.
Both laws require 60-day notices. The state law requires a notice if at least 25% of the workforce is reduced, or if 25 employees are laid off, whichever is greater. It also requires a notice if at least 500 employees are laid off. The federal law requires a notice if 50 or more employees at a single site are laid off.
However, since Nasco anticipates a “possibility of subsequent layoffs in coming months†that could lead to a total of 40-60 layoffs, including the reduction on or around Aug. 22, the company issued the notice.
Nasco provides supplies and education kits to teachers and schools. It also provides curriculums, lesson plans and webinars.
“We thank Nasco for their transparency in providing notice and hope that they have right-sized their organization for the future,†Houseman said. “This represents an opportunity to diversify the local economy and use available resources, such as Madison College, to continue to invest in our local workforce.â€
Madison College, the area technical and community college headquartered in Madison, has a location 827 Banker Road in Fort Atkinson.
Subsequent layoff dates have not been determined, according to the notice, and they’d depend on “certain unpredictable business and economic factors,†it said.
Nasco said it was aiming to provide as much notice as possible for affected employees, but said the separation dates may fluctuate and that “we will give you as much advance notice as possible if the anticipated separation schedule changes significantly.â€
The layoffs are expected to be permanent, according to the notice.
Nasco did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
