JANESVILLE — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Wednesday and Thursday, forecasting heat indices between 100-105 degrees both days.
The advisory is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Wednesday and expire at 8 p.m. Thursday.
“Just make sure you drink plenty of water,†said Lucas Oswalt of the Rock County Health Department, adding that alcohol can block recovery from heat-related health issues.
With heat indices as high as 105, heat stroke, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity, the National Weather says on its website.
“Look for symptoms. Look for sweating, dizzyness. You really want to prevent it from getting to that point,†Oswalt said.
Oswalt said taking breaks will be important.
“If you are feeling nauseous or confused, seek medical attention. If nothing else, sit down and take a rest. ThatÃÛèÖÊÓƵ better than not. You don’t want to risk it,†Oswalt said.
He also suggested taking care of others who are vulnerable, such as the elderly, and not leaving pets alone in cars.
A Tuesday bulletin from the National Weather Service suggested taking extra precautions when outside.
“Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke,†the bulletin states.
Oswalt also suggested taking advantage of cooling centers around the county as needed.
According to Rock County Human Services, there are 18 cooling centers around the county for people when forecasted temperatures and/or real temperatures exceed 90 degrees.
Most have no restrictions and/or do not need an appointment.
According to Human Services, the opening of sites is a local decision, they may close without notice, are not obligated to participate and will not extend or alter their hours so people should plan accordingly. Food and water are not provided, according to Human Services.
